Maldonado Sparks Caracas’ Comeback

Winter League Notes:
The Dominican League regular season is over, and teams are resting up for the playoffs, which begin on Friday. The Puerto Rican League was also off on Monday. There was only one Mexican-Pacific League game (Obregon 2, Guasave 1), and it appears that Luis Cruz is done with his winter league experience, since he has not played in many days.
The Venezuelan League had one big game:
Leones del Caracas 9, Navegantes del Magallanes 8
Magallanes scored 6 runs in the top of the 1st inning, which included a 2-run triple by Luis Rivas. They added another run in the 3rd and one more in the 6th, and Caracas began the bottom of the 6th inning trailing 8-1. Then Los Leones got busy. C Carlos Maldonado started the come back with a 3-run homer in the 6th, and he was at the plate when a wild pitch scored another run in the 7th. A solo homer by Javier Herrera in the 8th made the score 8-6. In the bottom of the 9th with one out, former Pirate Jose Castillo and Alex Cabrera singled, and Maldonado walked and was replaced by a pinch runner. Then Franklin Gutierrez (Mariners) blasted a bases-clearing triple to give Caracas the win. Maldonado also singled in the 4th; his batting average stands at .322. Ronald Uviedo pitched 1.1 innings for Caracas, allowing only a walk and striking out 2 batters.

Pirates close to extension with Doumit

Deal to cover three years, with a team option for a fourth.  That fourth year would be Doumit’s first of free agency. Update (10:00 PM): Dejan has updated his post to reflect that the Pirates will actually have options for each of the first two years of Doumit’s free agency.  That makes this a very good deal in my opinion, as it locks Doumit up, while giving the team flexibility if his production falls off a few...

Saturday’s Winter Leagues

Saturday’s winter ball games for Pirates, farmhands, and friends:

Puerto Rican League:
Leones de Ponce 11, Gigantes de Carolina 0
The Ponce pitching staff held Carolina to 5 hits, while their batters blasted away with 15 hits. Greg Picart pinch-hit in the 8th inning (strikeout) and then played two innings at third base without a fielding opportunity.
Dominican League:
Tigres del Licey 7, Azucareros de Este 2
Former Indy Indian (2007) Michael Tejerapicked up the win in his second appearance for Licey. He came into the game in the 3rd inning, with the score tied. He allowed two walks in that inning, but left both runners on base, then he gave up a double in the 4th inning. Tejera was still the pitcher of record when Licey scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, so he got the win. Tejera had made 4 starts with Los Caribes in the Venezuelan League earlier this winter season, with a 0-3 record and a 6.05 ERA in 19.1 innings. C Ronny Paulino singled, doubled, and walked for Licey, and he had a stolen base after the walk. The double brought in two runs for Licey in the 3rd.
Today is the final day of the Dominican League’s regular season. A round robin-style playoff will follow, with Cibao, Este, and Licey qualifying.
Venezuelan League:
Navegantes de Magallanes 7, Aguilas de Zulia 4
2B Luis Rivas doubled to lead off the 2nd inning for Magallanes, but was left on base. Chris Hernandez pitched a scoreless inning for Zulia in the 9th, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Tigres de Aragua 4, Tiburones de La Guaira 0
Los Tigres had a total of 13 hits, while holding La Guaira to only 6 hits. DH Raul Chavez had one of the hits for Aragua, in the 6th inning.
