The Pirates rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Phillies 7-4 in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.  After Abraham Nunez’ single of Phillies starter Vicente Padilla drove in Mike Benjamin to tie the game, Armando Rios’ two-run single off reliever Ricky Botallico broke the tie.  The victory was the Pirates’ fifth in a row, and it increased their lead in the NL Central to two games over St. Louis.

Two more robust offensive showings later–the Bucs outscored the Phils 22-12 over the weekend–the Pirates had a sweep of their in-state rival, six consecutive victories and a 12-5 record, the only time since 1992 that they have been seven games over .500.
