Pirates to draft Tony Sanchez

According to Keith Law, the Pirates have reached a pre-draft deal with Tony Sanchez, and will select him with the fourth overall pick.

I’m not sure if this is 100%. For example, is the deal contingent on other aspects happening in the draft? If Dustin Ackley fell to them, would the deal still be in place?

However, outside of Ackley falling to them, it looks like Tony Sanchez is the number one pick for us this year.

Here is my post on Sanchez from earlier today. Here is another post on the rising demands of first round talent this year.

One possibility this opens up would be a trade of Jason Jaramillo. I’m not saying Sanchez will be up quickly, but consider the following:

-Robinzon Diaz will be out of options next year
-Sanchez would immediately enter the minors, speeding up his progress
-The Pirates would have Doumit and Diaz, with Steve Lerud in the wings as a backup and Sanchez down the line, assumingly the catcher of the future.

Just a thought. Join us for the live blog of the MLB Draft, which starts soon.
