Pittsburgh Pirates Prospect Watch 7/16/09

The Prospect Tracker is updated with tonight’s games.


The Result: Indianapolis won 9-5 against Pawtucket.

Game Notes: Ian Snell pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, with seven strikeouts and five walks. Lastings Milledge went 2 for 3 with two walks. Robinzon Diaz went 2 for 6. Brian Bixler went 2 for 5. Steve Pearce went 3 for 5. Shelby Ford went 3 for 5 with his second homer of the year. The guy starting for Boston, Kris Johnson, was their #16 ranked prospect by Baseball America this year.


The Result: Altoona won 7-1 against Harrisburg.

-Jose Tabata went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

-Gorkys Hernandez went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

-Pedro Alvarez went 3 for 5 with his fifth homer at AA. Don’t look now, but Alvarez is hitting for a .353/.378/.676 line in the month of July at AA.

Other Game Notes: Jim Negrych went 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot. Steven Lerud went 2 for 3. Yoslan Herrera pitched seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits, with five strikeouts and a walk.


The Result: Lynchburg won 7-5 against Potomac.

-Chase D’Arnaud did not play.

Other Game Notes: Matt Hague went 2 for 4 with two runs. R.J. Rodriguez got his 17th save of the year, pitching a one hit inning, with one strikeout.


The Result: West Virginia lost 9-7 to Augusta.

-Robbie Grossman went 0 for 4 with a walk and three strikeouts.

-Tony Sanchez went 0 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout.

-Starling Marte went 2 for 5 from the leadoff spot, with two RBIs and his 8th stolen base of the season.

Other Game Notes: Jeremy Farrell went 2 for 5. Austin McClune went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Brian Leach pitched three innings, allowing four runs on ten hits, with two walks and two strikeouts, raising his ERA to 2.17.


The Result: State College lost 6-5 to Tri-City in 10 innings.

Game Notes: Brock Holt went 2 for 5 with his third homer of the season. State College tied it up by scoring two runs in the eighth, and one in the ninth, only to lose it in the tenth.

Nelson Pereira had a decent start, going four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with three strikeouts and a walk. Victor Black got roughed up, allowing two runs on four hits in an inning of work, while striking out two and walking none.


The Result: Bradenton beat the GCL Yankees 4-2 in 11 innings.

-Wes Freeman went 1 for 5.

-Gift Ngoepe went 2 for 4 with two runs and his fourth steal of the year, all four coming since last Tuesday.

-Ramon Cabrera went 1 for 5.

Other Game Notes: Brooks Pounders pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits, while striking out four and walking none. Rogelios Noris went 2 for 5, raising his average to .324 on the season.


The Result: The VSL Pirates beat the VSL Mets 9-7, scoring five runs in the ninth.

-Jorge Bishop went 1 for 5 with three RBIs.

-Exicardo Cayonez went 0 for 2 with a walk.

-Jonathan Barrios did not play.

Other Game Notes: Michaelangel Trinidad went 3 for 3 with a run and two walks.
