Pittsburgh Pirates Prospect Watch 7/22/09

The Prospect Tracker is updated with tonight’s games.

AAA

The Result: Indianapolis lost 3-1 to Durham.

-Argenis Diaz has been added to the Prospect Tracker. He has been assigned to AAA.

Other Game Notes: Neil Walker went 1 for 4 with a homer. Tom Gorzelanny pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run, with four hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts.

AA

The Result: Altoona lost 7-2 to Reading.

-Jose Tabata went 0 for 4.

-Gorkys Hernandez went 2 for 4.

-Pedro Alvarez went 1 for 4.

Other Game Notes: Jim Negrych went 1 for 4 with a double. Michael Crotta got hammered, allowing six runs on ten hits in five innings.

A+

The Result: Lynchburg won 6-3 against Potomac.

Game Notes: Jordy Mercer went 3 for 5 with two doubles. Matt Hague went 1 for 3. R.J. Rodriguez got his 18th save of the year.

A

The Result: West Virginia lost 7-2 to Savannah.

-Robbie Grossman went 3 for 5 with a run, a double, and his 27th steal of the season.

-Tony Sanchez went 1 for 4 with a run.

-Starling Marte went 1 for 5.

Other Game Notes: Calvin Anderson went 1 for 3 with a triple. Anderson is 6’7″, 240 pounds. I’m not sure if the outfielders all fell down or if maybe the field is 700 feet to the wall. Jeremy Farrell went 2 for 4. Brian Leach pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.

A-

The Result: State College lost 5-1 to Lowell.

Game Notes: Ty Summerlin, Evan Chambers, and Aaron Baker, all 2009 draft picks, each had a hit. Ricardo Paulino pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

GCL

The Result: Bradenton beat the GCL Braves 2-1.

-Wes Freeman went 0 for 3 with a walk.

-Gift Ngoepe went 0 for 2 with two walks.

-Ramon Cabrera went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Other Game Notes: Ryan Beckman, 2009 18th round pick, got the start, pitching five innings with one run on three hits, two walks, and a strikeout. 2009 second round pick Brooks Pounders pitched four perfect innings with three strikeouts to get the win.

VSL

The Result: The VSL Pirates beat the VSL Cardinals 5-4.

-Jorge Bishop went 3 for 5.

-Exicardo Cayonez went 1 for 5.

-Jonathan Barrios went 0 for 3.

Other Game Notes: Junior Sosa went 3 for 5 batting leadoff. Roberto Espinoza pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. Espinoza has a 2.15 ERA on the season.
