Pittsburgh Pirates Prospect Watch 8/12/09

The Prospect Tracker is updated with tonight’s games.


The Result: Indianapolis won 2-1 against Columbus.

-Jose Tabata did not play for the second game in a row.

-Argenis Diaz went 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Other Game Notes: Jeff Clement went 1 for 3 with a homer as the DH, his sixth with Indianapolis. Robinzon Diaz went 2 for 4, playing first base today. Virgil Vasquez pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.


The Result: Altoona lost 13-4 to Portland.

-Gorkys Hernandez went 0 for 4.

-Pedro Alvarez went 1 for 5.

Other Game Notes: Steve Lerud went 3 for 4. Kyle Bloom pitched four innings, allowing six runs on five hits, with three walks and a strikeout. Jeff Sues pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out two.


The Result: Lynchburg won 6-5 against Kinston.

-Chase d’Arnaud went 3 for 5 with a homer, five RBIs, and a stolen base.

-Bryan Moris returned from suspension, and went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, with three walks and four strikeouts to get the win.

Other Game Notes: Josh Harrison went 3 for 5, raising his average to .370 at Lynchburg. Jose De Los Santos went 3 for 4 with two runs. Jordy Mercer, Matt Hague, and Jared Keel each had a hit.


The Result: West Virginia won 9-2 against Lexington.

-Robbie Grossman went 1 for 5 with a double.

-Tony Sanchez went 2 for 4. He’s now batting .347/.460/.574 (1.034 OPS) at West Virginia, with a 25.25 AB/HR ratio.

-Starling Marte did not play.

-Quinton Miller pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits, with a walk, two strikeouts, and a home run allowed.

Other Game Notes: Jeremy Farrell went 2 for 3 with two doubles. Kyle Morgan went 1 for 3, scoring three runs. Diego Moreno pitched three innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.


State College was postponed. The NY-Penn League All-Star rosters were announced today. Making it from State College were 2009 9th round pick Brock Holt, 2009 21st round pick Pat Irvine, and 2008 49th round pick Zachary Foster.


The Result: Bradenton won 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th against the GCL Phillies.

-Wes Freeman went 1 for 4.

-Gift Ngoepe went 0 for 3 with a walk and a run.

-Ramon Cabrera went 2 for 4.

Other Game Notes: Gerlis Rodriguez went 2 for 4. Brent Klinger, the 21st round pick in the 2008 draft, pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out five.


The Result: The VSL Pirates lost game three of the VSL championship series to the VSL Rays by a score of 8-2. The VSL Rays win the 2009 VSL championship, making this the second year in a row that the VSL Pirates finish as the runner up.

-Jorge Bishop went 0 for 3.

-Exicardo Cayonez went 0 for 1 with a walk.

-Jonathan Barrios went 0 for 1 in a pinch hitting appearance.

Other Game Notes: Elias Diaz went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Junior Sosa had the only other Pirates hit.
