Jordy Mercer Video Recap

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Jordy Mercer in the third round of the 2008 MLB draft. He signed right away, and got his career started in A-ball, with 216 at-bats between State College and Hickory in 2008. In that time he hit for a .250/.297/.366 line, with five homers, and a 47:13 K/BB ratio. In 2009 he moved up to Lynchburg, playing the entire season in high-A. Mercer hit for a .255/.314/.400 line, with 10 homers, a Carolina League leading 36 doubles, and a 93:41 K/BB ratio.

Mercer was considered one of the best all around shortstops in the 2008 draft when considering players who could stay at the position. On offense he has good power, which has been gap power so far in the minors. On defense he has good range, good hands, and a plus arm. His defense was a little rough at times in 2009 with Lynchburg, but for the most part he’s smooth, and can play shortstop and third base effectively.
The big thing Mercer needs to work on is his plate patience, mostly improving his strike zone. Mercer often chases breaking balls low and away, which led to high strikeout ratios the past two seasons. If Mercer can improve in this area, he could increase his average above the .250 range, as well as draw more walks by laying off those outside pitches. He’s capable of becoming a solid all around shortstop, but still needs some development to get to that point.
Below I have several videos of Mercer in action. There are 24 at-bats, plus 30 fielding plays. I have a list of what is on this video recap below the video box, as well as some suggestions of plays that display some of Mercer’s skills.
