Pirates DFA Vasquez, Hacker, and Lerud

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Pirates have designated three players for assignment. Those players are Virgil Vasquez, Eric Hacker, and Steve Lerud. All three players will have ten days to be traded, claimed by another team, or released. The likely outcome would be that the players either get claimed by another team, and added to that team’s 40-man roster, or they would be assigned to the Pirates’ minor league system. Vasquez and Hacker would join AAA, while Lerud would join AA, making him eligible for the AAA portion of the Rule 5 draft. The 2010 40-man roster/payroll page is updated, along with the Future Payroll Commitments chart.

The Pirates now have four open spots on the 40-man roster, although two spots will be needed for Evan Meek and Jose Ascanio, who are both on the 60-day DL and don’t count towards the current 40-man roster. Several more spots will need to be opened on the 40-man roster so that the Pirates can protect important Rule 5 eligible prospects like Brad Lincoln, Gorkys Hernandez, and Bryan Morris.
