Pirates cut six players

According to Dejan Kovacevic, the Pittsburgh Pirates have made their first six cuts of Spring Training.  The cut players were outfielder Brandon Jones, shortstop Argenis Diaz, outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, relievers Ronald Uviedo and Ramon Aguero, and shortstop Brian Friday.

Jones and Diaz were sent to AAA.  Hernandez, Uviedo, and Aguero were sent to AA.  Friday was just assigned to minor league camp, so I guess it’s not determined where he will start the season.  The only surprise for me was Jones, although he didn’t get much playing time this Spring because of an injury, which makes him a long shot to make the major league roster out of camp.  This is the last option year for Jones and Diaz.

The Spring Training tracker is updated.  There are now 60 players in camp, and by my estimation, there are 42 players competing for seven open spots.
