Charleston River Dogs 6, West Virginia Power 4 (box)

Kyle McPherson gave up two 3-run innings on only 4 hits with 3 walks, as the River Dogs defeated the Power in South Carolina. The Power got the first run onto the scoreboard with one run in the top of the 2nd inning. 3B Jesus Brito walked and stole second base, then scored on RF Jose Hernandez’s triple into right field. The River Dogs came back with a triple of their own in the bottom of the inning. With one out, McPherson gave up a single, and the runner stole second base. Then he gave up a walk with a wild pitch, and the second runner also stole second base. The triple brought in both runners, then a sacrifice fly plated the runner from third, to give the River Dogs a 3-1 lead.

2B Jarek Cunningham led off the top of the 3rd with a solo home run. A single by 1B Aaron Baker, a double by DH Kyle Morgan, and a 2-RBI single by LFRogelios Noris gave the lead back to the Power, 4-3. In the 5th, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single tied the game again. Then a 2-run homer gave the River Dogs a lead they would not give up. Kyle McPherson suffered his second loss of the season. Maurice Bankston finished the game for the Power with 3 scoreless innings, scattering three singles over those innings.

The Power threatened in the 5th inning, when Cunningham singled and CF Evan Chambers doubled, but both were left on base. Aaron Baker also had a double, in the 8th, and that was the only base runner the Power managed to get over the last four innings.

Jupiter Hammerheads 7, Bradenton Marauders 3 (box)

SS Greg Picart and 3B Rodolfo Cardona posted 2 hits each, but the Marauders could not get past the Hammerheads in Jupiter tonight. The good news is that CF Starling Marte was back in the line-up after leaving last night’s game when he was hit on the hand by a pitch.

Bradenton scored in the top of the 1st when Picart led off with a single, and RF Robbie Grossman doubled. A passed ball allowed Picart to score, before an out had been recorded. Jupiter scored twice in the bottom of the inning, on two walks, a double steal, and a 2-RBI single, to give Jupiter a 2-1 lead.

The Marauders tied the score in the top of the 4th. Cardona singled with one out, and 1B Calvin Anderson doubled him in with a fly ball to right field. The tie only lasted a few minutes, though. In the bottom of the frame, Jupiter took a 2-run lead with a double and two singles, aided by a throwing error by 2B Gift Ngoepe.

Cardona added one more run for Bradenton in the 8th inning, when his RBI single plated Grossman, who had walked. It wasn’t enough, though. Jupiter scored one run in the bottom of the 7th on two doubles, and then two more runs in the 8th on a single, a triple, and an infield grounder.

Starter Jeff Locke took the loss for Bradenton. He pitched 4 innings and allowed the first 4 runs (3 earned), on 4 hits and 3 walks, with 3 strikeouts. Mike Felix pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief. He gave up a single in the 5th, and made a throwing error when he tried to pick the runner off first. A runner reached base on a fielding error by CF Starling Marte in the 6th, and a wild pitch put the runner on third base. Felix hit another batter with a pitch, but did not let a run score. Tom Boleska pitched the final two innings and allowed 3 more runs on 4 hits.

Starling Marte went 1-for-4 with a walk. Gift Ngoepe went 0-for-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
