Jakubauskas to start Saturday?

Chris Jakubauskas was pulled from his start tonight in Indianapolis and replaced with Jeff Karstens, which means he could very well be the starter on Saturday.  No official announcement has been made, although let’s consider the options:

D.J. Carrasco – Pitched today, probably wouldn’t be ready to start Saturday

Current Rotation – No one would be able to go on five days rest.

Brian Burres – Was just optioned down and can’t return for ten days (unless someone goes on the disabled list).

Kevin Hart – Could be an option since he last pitched on Sunday. They’d have to hold him from his start tomorrow if that’s the case.

Donald Veal – Just started on Tuesday.  Would be going on four days rest.

Brad Lincoln – Started on Monday, so Saturday would be his next scheduled start.

The Pirates would have to clear a roster spot for anyone else.  The only options other than Jakubauskas are Hart and Lincoln.  Jennifer Langosch suggests the Pirates could call Jakubauskas up for Friday’s game to use him in middle relief if needed.  If that were to happen, it would most likely mean the debut of Lincoln on Saturday.  Jakubauskas in relief would happen too late for the Pirates to pull Hart from his start, leaving Lincoln as the only option.

It seems all but guaranteed that Jakubauskas will get the start, as nothing I’ve read suggests the Pirates are comfortable with Lincoln at this point in the season.  Argenis Diaz would likely be the player optioned to the minors to make space for Jakubauskas.  Ross Ohlendorf is eligible to return on April 27th, which means Jakubauskas would only be needed for one start.
