SCOUTING REPORT
|
| Taillon has emerged as the best prep pitcher in the 2010 draft. The problem is that the Pittsburgh Pirates went out of their way to avoid taking a prep pitcher in the first round during the 2009 draft. One would think that the Pirates would take the same approach in the 2010 draft, especially with Taillon potentially demanding more money than 2009 picks like Tyler Matzek and Jacob Turner.
Taillon can get his fastball up to 99 MPH, and also has a curveball and a slider. All three pitches are plus pitches. Taillon also has a good changeup, although he doesn’t use it as often. Taillon has a commitment to Rice University, but he could sign if he was given a decent offer in the draft. With Anthony Ranaudo’s injury, Taillon is probably the best bet for an ace pitcher at the top of the draft, although it’s important to note that high school pitchers are never a guarantee. If anything, Taillon will tell us a little more about how the Pirates view first round prep pitchers, as he will likely be there for them with the number two overall pick. |
