Ross Ohlendorf is unlikely to make his next scheduled start on Saturday, according to Dejan Kovacevic. Ohlendorf missed his last start on Monday, and was replaced by Brian Burres. Kovacevic said that Burres or Daniel McCutchen are candidates for the start on Saturday.
The only way McCutchen can make the start is if Ohlendorf goes on the disabled list. McCutchen was recently optioned to the minors, and players can’t return from optional assignment for ten days, unless a player on the 25-man roster moves to the disabled list.
The Pirates could back-date Ohlendorf’s disabled list assignment to April 8th, which was the day after his last start. By doing that, Ohlendorf would be eligible to come off the DL for his next scheduled start on April 23rd. This would also allow McCutchen to make the start, rather than Burres.
