According to Dejan Kovacevic, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed six Latin American prospects. The players are outfielder Willy Garcia, right handed pitchers Brayan Almonte, Oderman Rocha, and Jose Luis Acosta, left handed pitcher Angel Sanchez, and first baseman Jose Roman.
We heard about Garcia back in February, although the deal was never confirmed until now. Garcia received $280,000, which is higher than any bonus given out in 2009, and is the third highest reported bonus ever given out by the Pirates in the international market, behind Exicardo Cayonez ($400,000) and Jordaneli Carvajal ($350,000). Rene Gayo had this to say about the 6′ 1″, 200 pound, 17 year old outfielder:
“Willy Garcia has an athletic body with a chance to develop five tools. He is a great addition to our system and has great game instincts with an aggressive approach to play the game.”
The rest of the scouting reports from Gayo can be found on the original story at the Post-Gazette.
