Impressive. Since this poor season's showings vs. above average starters I've been thinking about past years. IIRC the Pirates have more than showed better than expected results in those contests. Maybe it's my flawed memory (highly likely!) or my very low expectations vs. those well regarded guys that we may have (even slightly) exceeded.
Any way you look at the '12 offense, it's pitiful. With such a thin bench, I don't see wasting a PH on a pitcher when the object is a sacrifice bunt. At one time, Hurdle must have put down a successful bunt on a squeeze play and he remembers it as the most exciting play ever. The longer this season goes, the less impressive he gets to me.

Good call - you are right. I should've pulled out the starts against Pittsburgh for the NL average. Simple enough to do and here are the numbers:
ERA - 3.87
BB/9 - 3.0
K/9 - 7.3
K/BB - 2.45
WHIP - 1.314

Not a huge difference - moving the ERA from 3.80 to 3.87.

There is a small flaw in your analysis: you didn't remove starts against the Pirates from the NL average. I don't think it ought to make a significant difference, but it's there.
