Pirates sign Tyler Waldron and Vincent Payne

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed two more draft picks: fifth round pick, Tyler Waldron, and 12th round pick Vincent Payne.  The two right handed pitchers bring the signing total up to eight for the 2010 draft class.

Waldron had a down year at Oregon State in 2010, before ending up as the team’s closer.  He is probably best as a reliever, as he has a plus fastball that ranges 89-94 MPH, and a plus slider that he uses as an out pitch.

Payne was said to have signed on Wednesday in a comment on his player page.  I was unable to get confirmation on this comment, but it’s obvious the comment was correct.  Payne had a lot of trouble with his control last year, but put up some good strikeout numbers in the process.

I’m guessing that both players will be used in State College, although they could go to the GCL, which starts on Monday.
