Pittsburgh Pirates Prospect Watch 6/25/10


Indianapolis beat Toledo 9-8.  Michael Crotta pitched five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.  Corey Hamman pitched two shutout innings, allowing a walk and a hit, and striking out one.  Vinnie Chulk added a perfect inning, with two strikeouts.  Jean Machi closed things out, but not before adding two runs in an inning of work.

Jeff Clement went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, and five RBIs.  Jim Negrych went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Brandon Moss went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Kevin Melillo went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.  Alex Presley went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in his AAA debut.

Altoona lost to Bowie 5-1.  Justin Wilson had a good outing, allowing one run on three hits in six innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.  Derek Hankins added two perfect innings with a strikeout.  Michael Dubee had a bad outing, allowing four runs on five hits, and getting just two outs.  Jeff Sues got the final out, although he did allow one inherited runner to score.

Jordy Mercer went 2-for-3 with a double.  Chase d’Arnaud went 1-for-4 with a double and the only RBI of the game.  Anthony Norman went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Bradenton lost 8-0 to Jupiter.  Casey Erickson had a bad outing, allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings of work.  Melkin Laureano pitched 4.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.  Matt McSwain pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts.

Adam Davis went 2-for-2 with a walk.  Jose de los Santos went 1-for-2.  Quincy Latimore went 1-for-4. Those were the only hits for Bradenton.  Eric Fryer went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

West Virginia lost 8-6 to Greensboro.  Jason Erickson pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, with a walk and six strikeouts.  Ryan Kelly got out of the seventh inning, but allowed four runs on four hits, with two homers allowed to start the eighth inning.  He left the eighth without recording an out.  Marc Baca allowed two runs, one earned, in an inning of work.

Evan Chambers went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and two RBIs.  Jose Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  Jesus Brito went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Benjamin Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

State College beat Jamestown 6-2.  Brooks Pounders made the start, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings, with no walks and two strikeouts.  Ryan Beckman pitched the final four innings, allowing no runs with just one walk and one hit allowed.

Gerlis Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a run, a stolen base, and two RBIs.  Justin Bencsko went 2-for-5 with a run scor

ed and a stolen base.  Walker Gourley went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Chase Lyles went 1-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI.  Kelson Brown went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Gift Ngoepe walked in all three plate appearances, and scored a run.

GCL Pirates (RK, Short Season)
The GCL Pirates beat the GCL Braves 9-6.  Vincent Payne made his debut, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in two innings, with no walks and a strikeout.  Barrett Phillips allowed two runs on four hits in two innings.  Yeyber Sanchez pitched four shutout innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.  Dinesh Patel allowed a run on three hits in one inning.

Eric Avila went 2-for-4 with a homer, his second in the last two nights, plus two runs, two RBIs, and two stolen bases.  Avila has four steals in his last two games.  Kevin Mort went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI.  Jorge Bishop went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

The VSL Pirates beat the VSL Tigers 7-6.  Orlando Castro pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with two walks and a strikeout.  Castro has just a 0.72 ERA in 25 innings this year.  The runs tonight were the first two runs he’s allowed this season.  He also has a 17:7 K/BB ratio so far.  Deivis Goatache allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.  Remberto Romo allowed a run on two hits in 2.2 innings.

Luis Cardona went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.  Francisco Aponte went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and an RBI.  Kelly Aponte went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Carlos Esqueda went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

The DSL Pirates beat the DSL Astros 8-7.  Porfirio Lopez went three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with five walks and one strikeout.  Jonathan Herrand pitched three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.  Yoan Gonzalez pitched three innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Samuel Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a double, a run, and three RBIs.  Willy Garcia went 1-for-5 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.  Alen Hanson went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Raul Fortunato went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and a stolen base.
