Pittsburgh Pirates catching prospect Tony Sanchez was hit in the face with a pitch in the first inning of today’s game between the Bradenton Marauders and St. Lucie. This is the second time this month that Sanchez has been hit in the head with a pitch, with the first instance keeping him out of action for about a week.
Sanchez is alert, and according to Dejan Kovacevic the injury is not thought to be serious. This is the third injury this year for Sanchez, as he also dealt with a shoulder injury in April.
Sanchez was just selected today to appear in the MLB Futures Game during the All-Star festivities, joining teammate Gorkys Hernandez. Sanchez will represent the United States team, while Hernandez will represent the World team.
UPDATE 11:22 PM: I heard from Sanchez earlier tonight that he broke his jaw in two places and will need surgery. Bad news for a guy who can’t seem to catch a break this year.
