Never too early for 2011 draft coverage. In fact, I’ve been planning an early 2011 draft preview, which was going to go up tonight, but which will probably be pushed to tomorrow afternoon with the Heredia news.

Great summary Tim. A lot of detail that I was unaware of. The Pirates seem appropriately patient with their young arms, so I suspect they will proceed cautiously with Taillon.

You’ll have to share your thoughts on how they handle Heredia. I imagine it will be even more methodicially, essentially allowing GCL Pirates serve as his HS team for the next year and a half.

So is it too early to start talking about Anthony Rendon? … Yeah, probably (althouhg he’s the prefect example of the advanced college player).

Just one minor edit. Minor League bonuses can be broken up into more than 2 yearly payments if the player is considered a “2-sport athlete”, such as Zach Lee this year and Donovan Tate last year. Those bonuses can be broken out into 5 yearly payments. Of course, that doesn’t apply to Taillon.

Outside of that, an excellent summary. I suspect that the Pirates will handle Taillon in a similar manner to what the Rockies did with Matzek this year. Instructional League this year, extended spring training next year, with a “promotion” to West Virginia in June. I would guess that the Pirates will limit him to about 100 innings at most next year
