The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Jeff Clement on the 15-day disabled list with left knee irritation, and have recalled relief pitcher Justin Thomas. The Pirates now have 13 pitchers on the active roster, and only 12 hitters, although there was little need for Clement, outside of being a pinch hitter.
Rosters expand in about a week, so it will be interesting to see if the 13-man bullpen is a temporary thing, or if the Pirates plan on bringing up a hitter to replace Clement off the bench until he can return (or until rosters expand, whichever comes first. The only options to come up right now are John Bowker and Pedro Ciriaco, although the Pirates may feel that everyday playing time for each player is more important over the next week than the half a dozen at-bats they’d get off the bench in that same time frame.
