Not a fan of this idea Tim, there is still something to be said for a little veteran presence in the clubhouse and in addition, I personally still like the idea of having a solid defensive player who can spot at 1b and 3b too.
I like Clement, nothing against him, and I sooo like the Mercer call-up – just the right time too (We’ll see…) but I’ll still take McGehee over Clement. At least for this year.

I would not be opposed to Clement if he has improved his approach at the plate. His strike out to walk level at the major league level is so different than what he has done in AAA.
He also needs to be more than a statue at first. I think he is a player that needs to be promoted on what scouts see and not on his stats.

Clement has a pretty good excuse for struggling the last couple years since he didn’t have any knees. The surgery he had that caused him to miss 18 months basically regrew cartilage in his knees.

I’d agree that Clement is a better option than any other systems AAA hitter. I wouldn’t bring him up though to rot. If he comes up, he should play full time, and there doesn’t seem to be a spot for him. Plus I think McGehee has enough service time they couldn’t outright him to AAA, so they’d eat his contract, something the Pirates don’t like to do, nor should they.
