In the past week, the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a push towards middle round picks like Ryan Hafner, Jared Lakind, and Drew Maggi. Pirates Prospects has learned that 21st round pick Dale Carey has also received increased attention from the Pirates lately.
Carey has committed to Miami, and is currently planning on leaving for school on Tuesday, but he won’t know his fate until Monday, which is the last day for draft prospects to sign. Carey hasn’t officially decided whether to attend Miami or sign with the Pirates, and will wait until the deadline to make that decision.
Carey was rated the 25th best prospect in a very strong Georgia class by Baseball America. Carey had offers from four major schools to play baseball, and gave up football to concentrate on the sport. He is a five tool talent, although he has the potential for power, with not much showing so far. His throw from center field has been clocked at 92 MPH, displaying his strong arm. He also has good range, which allows him to stick in center field.
