With this abomination of a staff even getting to June or July might take 8 different starters. Non-tendering Karstens when he is easily your fourth best starter makes no sense. Duke, LaRoche, Ledezma are easy non-tenders. Duke and LaRoche aren’t very good and Ledezma has a little something but a better replacement can be found. Frankly Ledezma can likely be brough back on a minor league deal.

Olendorf and McDonald just don’t have the track record that anybody can assume they will just come in and pitch like proven starters. We have all seen pitchers have nice 2nd halves of seasons and then completly forget how to picth the next year. Somehow someway they MUST find two solid major league pitchers. Later in the year they can trade any excess pitching if they have to. But to count on JMac and Ollie and or Morton, Lincoln or Owens is a risk they can’t afford. They say that their goal isn’t to reach .500. Well they better start thinking that way because it’s a hell of alot better than .300.

Would easily let Duke, Ledezma, Diaz, Young, Gallagher, and LaRoche go. We need to open up the 40 man to protect guys with potential. I would much rather lose a Zach Duke for nothing than losing any Rule V eligible guy.

What the Pirates did with Capps this year was great. By non-tendering him they were able to trade his replacement (Dotel) for real prospects. We couldn’t get that for Capps before the season, and there was a chance he would never rebound. These guys are all expendable.
