Dejan Kovacevic discusses his ROY ballot

Published:

As you probably know, Pirates beat writer Dejan Kovacevic has been taking some heat this week for his Rookie of the Year selections. Dejan left Atlanta Braves right fielder Jason Heyward off his ballot, voting for Buster Posey, Neil Walker and Jose Tabata instead.

Dejan was a guest on today’s Up And In podcast, hosted by Kevin Goldstein and Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus. He spent nearly 20 minutes discussing his vote, and the rationale he used to make his selection. It’s an interesting discussion, so head over there and give it a listen if you have a chance. Dejan comes on at the 1:02:13 mark.

I don’t agree with Dejan’s ballot, particularly his placement of Tabata above Heyward. But the fact that he has faced the music and at least provided a semi-rationale explanation for his selections should be acknowledged. This should come as no surprise, as Dejan has always welcomed productive criticism of his work. For example, over the years, I have written several critical pieces regarding things he has written. On a few occasions, he has posted a link to my critical article on his Twitter feed. As someone who has fallen into a a fair share of mindless internet debates with less than professional members of the mainstream media, I find that openness refreshing.
