Our rule at Pirates Prospects is that we don’t rank a player/pitcher until they play stateside, so most of the pitchers that Wilbur talked about in this post were in the DSL/VSL last year.

As for Inman, he has barely pitched since being drafted in 2009, so he wasn’t considered. At this point, Townsend’s upside is limited, so he didn’t crack the 30 either.

Great article. I’m more and more impressed with the Pirates scouts/minor league system. Two of the better young college pitchers I’ve seen (Emanuel @ UNC and Haviland @ Duke) were 2010 Pirates draftees.

In the Prospect Guide you had Stetson Allie rated as your #3 prospect in the system. His strenghts are age, size, and velocity. Yeiber Sanchez and Yhonathan Herrand would seem to be comparable in those areas. Yet they weren’t ranked among the top 39 pitching prospects. In fact, none of the pitchers mentioned in the article (except Allie) were included in the top 39.

Do you expect to have any of the pitchers above in the prospect listing next year?

Have you been able to get a look at Jodaneli Carvajal? BA listed him as a top twenty prospect in the DSL / VSL summer leagues, a ss/2b with “electric speed.” I’m intrigued.
