The big difference is the Rays were not in a great need for power bat the Bucs are. For 2.33 years of Pence I’d be open to a package that included Sanchez, Allie and any hitter besides Cutch or Alvarez. In his walk year Pence will have value at the trade deadline so the deal is for Pence and his trade value in 2013.

Sanchez has had injury problems and his bat is not developing.

Most feel that Allie will end up in the back end of the bullpen.

Tabata and Presley are probably interchangeable so as long as one remains it’s OK. If the Astros would rather have Marte instead of one of those two he’d be blocked anyway.

Right now there is no corner player in the system that projects better than Pence. So the time is to act is now to better the ballclub this year and the next two. 28-30 are prime years for ballplayer.

Or would they? Since MLB keeps saying that the Astros will be headed to the AL next yr.. Still dont understand how the Pirates play 3 teams not even in the same time zone

I like the article but disagree that it didn’t hurt the Rays in the short term. Bay was awesome for Boston in ’08 and ’09. Do the Rays win the World Series with Bay? I would argue perhaps. I don’t know if Pence is the piece we need. However, I would be willing to part with some strong pieces from the future in an exchange for a stud now if it gave us a shot this year and next.

The other part that goes unmentioned is the payroll part of this. Since Pence is arbitration eligible, his salary will be exponentially higher during his time here over Tabata/Presley. I’m not sure that a salary that is 14-20 times greater than what our current players will earn at ML minimum is enough to justify the increase in production.

I will trade for Pence right now. Then in July 2013 trade him for a couple of prospects. That trade will make room for a Marte or Lambo who should be ready for the big show.

agree. We cannot maintain this winning style without a continuation of prospects coming up. Presley has made contributions in almost every game since being called up. After Marte we are weak in AA-AAA. Sanchez coulb be a flop and where does that put our minors bat ability especially if we dont sign our 2nd round pick. With so many injuries, only a deep team can overcome these obstacles.
