Minor League Schedule: 7/17/11

For an in depth review of yesterday’s games please check out our minor league wrap-up which can be found here. Both the GCL and VSL teams have off today and resume their schedule Monday morning. All three rookie league teams are in first place. No starter has been listed for Bradenton but last night’s starter, Nate Baker didn’t make the start so we repeated his preview.  West Virginia also has not named a starter for today although it’s possible Colton Cain(5-7 3.15) who is currently listed on the DL returns for the start. ** UPDATE: Cain and Baker are now listed as the starters for today**

Allie is making his 5th pro start tonight

AAA: Indianapolis (48-47) @ Columbus (59-34) 5:05pm
Probable starter: Garrett Olson (3-0 2.37)

Olson has made 9 starts and 5 relief appearances without picking up a loss. He has just a 2.16 ERA in his last 10 appearances but two times in his last four starts he couldn’t reach five innings and he has walked 11 batters over that time. He has allowed just 29 hits in 49.1 innings.

AA: Altoona (39-53) @ Erie (44-48) 1:05pm
Probable starter: Phillip Irwin (3-1 3.45)

Irwin will make his 6th appearance and 5th start since being promoted from Bradenton. He went 6 innings in his last start,allowing 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out six. He has issued just 3 walks in 28 innings with Altoona and on the year he has walked 15 while striking out 61 in 82 innings. This will be his first appearance vs Erie.

High-A: Bradenton (43-50 overall 13-10 2nd half) VS Dayton (49-42 overall 10-11 2nd half) 5:00pm
Probable starter: Nate Baker (5-6 3.87)

Baker will make his 16th start of the year tonight, he has also made four relief appearances. In his last start on Monday he gave up 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work. In his last 10 games spanning 46 innings he has a 2.93 ERA. On the road this year he is 2-2 3.04 in 10 games. Nate has 65 strikeouts on the year, 2nd highest total on Bradenton to Brett Lorin’s 75.

Low-A: West Virginia (43-48 overall 8-15 2nd half) VS Charleston (36-57 overall 10-13 2nd half) 2:05pm

Short Season A: State College (8-21) @ Williamsport (15-14) 6:05pm
Probable starter: Stetson Allie (0-0 5.40)

Stetson will make his 5th start of the year tonight and 6th overall appearance. He pitched in relief in his last outing six days ago going 2 innings and giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. In his last start on July 6th he went 4 innings allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five. It was his second straight five strikeout game. Overall he has 17 K’s in his first 15 pro innings.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (16-8) VS GCL Braves (11-13) 12:00pm 7/18

The GCL Pirates are in 1st place, one game ahead of the Yankees.

VSL: VSL Pirates (31-22) VS VSL Phillies (23-29) 11:00am 7/18

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays.

DSL: DSL Pirates (26-14) VS DSL Dodgers (20-20) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 1st place, 2 1/2 games ahead of the DSL Royals.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
