Minor League Schedule: 7/22/11

Ryan Doumit is on rehab with Bradenton and Ross Ohlendorf is now with Altoona for his rehab assignment. All three rookie league teams are in first place. The VSL Pirates have just 15 games left in their season, two of them versus the 2nd place Rays.

Allie pitched three shutout innings his last outing

AAA: Indianapolis (51-49) VS Charlotte (49-50) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Garrett Olson (3-0 2.82)

After posting a sub-2.00 ERA in both May and June, Olson has struggled through this month posting a 4.60 ERA in three starts. He has walked at least three batters in each of his last five starts. Despite the struggles he has the lowest ERA on the Indy staff and has 10 starts and 5 relief appearances without a loss.

AA: Altoona (41-56) VS New Britain (49-47) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Phillip Irwin (3-2 5.18)

Irwin is coming off his worst start since being promoted to Altoona. He gave up 11 hits and 9 runs in just 4.1 innings. Combined on the year between Altoona and Bradenton he has made 15 starts( one relief appearance) with an 8-2 3.23 record over 86.1 innings, recording 66 strikeouts and allowing just 16 walks. He has also allowed just 5 home runs all year.

High-A: Bradenton (46-52 overall 16-12 2nd half) VS Tampa (52-44 overall 15-12 2nd half) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Nate Baker (5-7 3.95)

Nate will be making his 17th start and 21st overall appearance. In his last ten appearances(7 starts) he has a 3.30 ERA over 46.1 innings. In his last start on Sunday he gave up 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. At home this year Nate has a 4.84 ERA in 48.1 innings, on the road it is 3.04 in 47.1 innings.

Low-A: West Virginia (45-50 overall 10-17 2nd half) @ Savannah (55-41 overall 16-11 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (6-5 4.87)

Tyler has made 15 starts and 2 relief appearances this year totaling 85 innings. His 14 home runs allowed is the 3rd most in the South Atlantic League but in his last 5 starts he has given up just one homer. In his last start Tyler lasted just 2.2 IP giving up 5 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and he recorded two strikeouts. He has a 5.55 ERA on the road.

Short Season A: State College (10-24) @ Mahoning Valley (19-15) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Stetson Allie (0-0 4.50)

Allie will make his 6th start and 7th overall appearance tonight. He is coming off his best start this past Sunday when he went 3 innings with no hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. His last three starts he has given up 2 runs in 11 innings with 13 strikeouts. His 20 total strikeouts is 2nd on the team to Nick Kingham who has 24.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (19-9) VS GCL Yankees (17-11) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are in 1st place, two games ahead of the Yankees who they start a two game series vs today.

VSL: VSL Pirates (32-25) VS VSL Tigers (21-34) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays.

DSL: DSL Pirates (28-16) VS DSL Indians (19-23) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 1st place,tied with the DSL Royals who have played two more games.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
