Minor League Schedule: 7/27/11

For an in depth review of yesterday’s games please check out our minor league wrap-up which can be found here. Please take note of the early afternoon start times for Bradenton and Indianapolis. West Virginia has off today. They resume play at home on Thursday night. Luis Heredia is due to start today but like usual with the GCL, nothing has been announced.

Baker leads Bradenton in games started and innings pitched

AAA: Indianapolis (54-51) @ Charlotte (51-54) 12:15pm
Probable starter: Garrett Olson (3-0 2.55)

Garrett threw 5.2 innings his last start on Friday night allowing just 2 unearned runs. He has made 11 starts and 5 relief appearances without picking up a loss. As a starter this year he has a 2-0 2.29 record with 40 strikeouts in 51 innings.He is the ERA leader for Indianapolis.

AA: Altoona (43-58) @ Reading (53-49) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Phillip Irwin (3-3 5.08)

Irwin makes his 7th start with Altoona tonight. He has also made one relief appearance. His last outing on Friday night he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings while taking his 2nd straight loss. On the year between Altoona and Bradenton he has an 8-3 3.31 record in 17 games. He has pitched 92.1 total innings issuing just 17 walks while striking out 70 batters.

High-A: Bradenton (48-55 overall 18-15 2nd half) @ Clearwater (54-47 overall 16-16 2nd half) 12:00pm
Probable starter: Nate Baker (5-7 3.90)

Baker will make his 18th start of the year tonight and 22nd overall appearance. On Friday night he allowed 2 earned runs over 6 innings of work. Nate has a 2-2 3.04 record in 10 road appearances this season. Nate is the team leader in both starts and in innings pitched with 101.2 so far. He has allowed just 3 home runs all year and none on the road. He has not faced Clearwater yet this season.

Low-A: West Virginia (47-53 overall 12-20 2nd half) VS Lakewood (51-49 overall 18-14 2nd half) 7:05pm 7/28
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (6-6 4.75)

Tyler will get his 17th start and 19th overall appearance. On Friday night he went 6 innings allowing two runs. He last faced Lakewood on June 18th and got the win going 7 innings while giving up 2 runs. Waldron has a 5-1 3.96 record in 10 home games this year. He has allowed the 2nd most hits, home runs and walks among West Virginia pitchers. He is also 2nd in innings trailing Colton Cain by four.

Short Season A: State College (11-27) @ Tri-City (15-22) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Matt Benedict (1-2 4.83)

State College is in 6th place in their division, ten games out of 1st place. The other five teams in the league are all within one game of each other in the standings. The Spikes now have the worst record in the 14 team NYPL.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (20-12) VS GCL Tigers (13-19) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are currently in 2nd place, just one game back in the standings.

VSL: VSL Pirates (34-26) VS VSL Rays (33-28) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays who they play today. There are just 11 games left in the season.

DSL: DSL Pirates (30-17) VS DSL Royals (31-17) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 2nd place,1/2 game behind the DSL Royals who they play today.

John Dreker

John was born in Kearny, NJ, hometown of the 2B for the Pirates 1909 World Championship team, Dots Miller. In fact they have some of the same relatives in common, so it was only natural for him to become a lifelong Pirates fan. Before joining Pirates Prospects in July 2010, John had written numerous articles on the history of baseball while also releasing his own book and co-authoring another on the history of the game.
