Comments on: Pirates acquire Jason Grilli Your best source for news on the Pittsburgh Pirates and their minor league system. Plus I don’t like how much he K’s. Nice power and defense though.

By: white angus Wed, 20 Jul 2011 22:20:00 +0000 as much as i dislike aquiring Pena, im gonna let that slide.  but i would like cutch batting 3rd.  i want him batting in the 1st inning every game.

By: John DiVito Wed, 20 Jul 2011 15:22:00 +0000 This is good… we didn’t give anything up to get another bullpen option for the remainder of the year.  If Grilli disappoints, we release him and bring back one of the guys we just sent down (Leroux, Moskos, Wood) or whoever is coming back from injury (Meek or Ohlendorf)… no harm done.

By: Anonymous Wed, 20 Jul 2011 14:40:00 +0000 Saw Overbay sting the ball in his final AB last night. My thought was that I hadn’t seen him hit that hard while a Pirate. I can’t grasp paying Pena $5MM after the season. Tough it out for up to 2+ months more with Overbay.

The Bucs have a very good pen. Sometimes, when you try to improve you find out you were better off with what you had. Hope that’s not the case with Grilli. This team needs a reliable 8th inning guy…..and a RH bat.

By: Anonymous Wed, 20 Jul 2011 14:09:00 +0000 great pickup.
Motivated and excited to be in the burgh. thrives on the pressure and is hitting 94 consistently with an a minus slider.

Trade for Carlos Pena and re-insert Pedro/Tabata and I think we are set.
Pena can simply win games for the Pirates with one swing of the bat. Overbay can’t do that. The Pirates are going to be playing low scoring games and the threat of Pena’s bat behind Cutch would be huge.

By: Greg Arendas Wed, 20 Jul 2011 13:58:00 +0000 This was not a trade.  Grilli was released by Philly AAA team.  GM Huntington: “We are aware (Grilli) has been released to pursue ML opportunity. We are interested and optimistic.”
