Rehab Updates: Ryan Doumit, Ross Ohlendorf

Doumit is starting his rehab work tonight.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced two rehab updates this morning:

-Ryan Doumit is set to begin a rehab assignment today with the Bradenton Marauders.  Position players can only spend 20 days on rehab assignment, which means that Doumit will return to Pittsburgh no later than August 10th.  My guess is he would likely assume the starting catching role, although I could see Michael McKenry getting some playing time, based on how he has played so far this year.

-Ross Ohlendorf, who has already made two rehab appearances with the Marauders, will make his next rehab start with the Altoona Curve on Sunday July 24th.  Pitchers can spend up to 30 days on rehab assignment, and since Ohlendorf started his work on July 14th, he will return no later than August 13th.  That return date could be sooner, as it’s obviously a good sign that Ohlendorf is being moved up to AA.  It’s unknown whether Ohlendorf will rejoin the rotation, possibly as the 6th man, or go to the bullpen.

    This season has been kind of odd anyway (in a good way), why not give the ‘ole 6 man rotation a try and save some innings on our other 5 starters arms who will enter uncharted territory at some point in regards to innings pitched.

    I think Ohlie is gonna have to earn his way back into the rotation unless for some reason Maholm or Correia would get dealt. Just as everything has been going right all season the Pirates are getting healthy perfectly at the trade deadline which gives them a lot more options and flexibility in deals. Doumit could give us a nice offensive boost we need. He has come off the DL hot before.  Hopefully he can get hot and spark us before his next injury!
