i have to disagree with this assessment... drafting the elite athletes which includes guys that throw 100 is the way to build a elite system we are doing that effectively... where i see the breakdown is in player development, we are taking some of the better prospects in the game and seeing them regress under our coaching... alderson was ranked ahead of bumgarner in the giants system, now he's a reliever? pedro alvarez took a huge step backwards after being touted as having the most power of that draft class by everyone that matters. we change the swing drastically of a player with a career .860 OPS in AAA ( clement ) and have our pitcher of the year 2 years running regress in AAA after his stuff took huge strides forward the year before... i put this squarely on player development, we gotta be better than this

Definitely not there. The pitching upside is better but I'm not seeing a lot of hitters being developed.

I think its clear, we are not there yet. It is frustrating when a team like the Phillies can trade away prospect after prospect and still have a system that is just as good, if not better than the Pirates. If the Pirates continue to waste picks on guys like Stetson Allie who throw hard, but can't pitch, the painfully slow growth in the system will continue. Still, I am optimistic...
