Minor League Schedule: 8/2/11

Altoona had off yesterday, they start a three game series at home versus Binghamton tonight. Bradenton has off today and was rained out yesterday. The VSL Pirates have just six games left in their season.

Lopez makes his first start of the year.

AAA: Indianapolis (57-53) @ Gwinnett (60-48) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Garrett Olson (4-0 2.48)

Garrett will make his 13th start of the year tonight. He has also made 5 relief appearances. He has allowed just 38 hits this year in 65.1 innings. His 5.2 hits per 9 innings rate is by far the lowest in the organization. He has allowed just one earned run over his last two starts covering 11 innings pitched.

AA: Altoona (46-61) VS Binghamton (44-65) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Phillip Irwin (4-3 4.73)

Phillip will get his 8th start since being promoted to Altoona, he has also made one relief appearance. Overall on the year he has a 9-3 3.27 record in 18 games. He has pitched 99 total innings allowing 95 hits, 17 walks and he struck out 73 on the year. In his last start he gave up 2 runs on just three hits, no walks and he struck out three.

High-A: Bradenton (52-56 overall 22-16 2nd half) @ (49-59 overall 15-22 2nd half) 7:05pm 8/3
Probable starter: Nate Baker (6-7 3.80)

Bradenton has a half game lead in their division for the 2nd half title with 31 games left. Last night’s game was canceled and will not be played at a later date. Bradenton also is tied for the 2nd best overall record in their division.

Low-A: West Virginia (50-55 overall 15-22 2nd half) VS Greensboro (57-49 overall 17-19 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Porfirio Lopez (1-3 4.01)

Lopez has pitched 12 games with both Bradenton and West Virginia this year. This is his first start of the season and it will also be his first start since making the jump to the states. He is the rare DSL player that jumps right over the short-season teams. In 24 total games this year he has a 3-4 4.56 record over 47.1 innings. He has allowed 49 hits, 22 walks and he has recorded 40 strikeouts.

Short Season A: State College (15-29) @ Vermont (23-20) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Matt Benedict (2-2 4.30)

State College is in last place in their division, 11 games behind 1st place Mahoning Valley. They begin a 3 game series today against Vermont, who is in 1st place in their own division. The Spikes have a 4-18 record on the road this season

Rookie: GCL Pirates (22-15) VS GCL Phillies (19-18) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are currently in 2nd place, four games back in the standings.

VSL: VSL Pirates (37-29) VS VSL Reds (33-34) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a one game lead over the 2nd place Rays. Their season ends Saturday and five of the six teams in the league still have a chance for the playoffs.

DSL: DSL Pirates (33-18) VS DSL Indians (23-28) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are tied for 1st place with the DSL Royals who they play two more times this year. Their season ends on August 19th.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
