The “projection strategy” may turn out quite well for the Pirates. The truth of the matter is that the success (or failure) of the strategy may not be seen for years to come. It is certainly a risk to take for a small market team who really puts emphasis toward player development.

However, I hope they are not passing on quality pitchers just becuase they do not meet their “projection requirements.” There are quite a number of successful pitchers littered throughout the Major Leagues who are not lean, 6’4 guys. Oswalt, Cain, Lincecum, Jurrjens…

I appriciate that the Pirates are spending alot of money in the draft and that they are trying to be creative in their choices but i wish they would have just gone with the ” normal draft stratagy ” and just taken the best player available.

There might have been a lot more players closer to the big club with less ? marks. We probably won’t know about these pitchers for another four years.
