Gerrit Cole to Start the AFL Rising Stars Game

Gerrit Cole, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, and the top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ system, will start the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game, which takes place on November 5th.  The game will be broadcast on the MLB Network, with Cole going up against left handed pitcher and fellow 2011 first round pick Danny Hultzen. This Date in Pirates History: October 29

Born on this date in 1944 was Pirates pitcher Jim Bibby, who was with the team from 1978-1983. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Bibby had just a 60-69 career record at the age of 33 but he turned that record around while in a Pirates uniform. A Draft Luxury Tax?

Earlier this week we heard that draft bonuses were the last major issue to be resolved in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with Bud Selig pushing for hard slotting.  Since then we’ve heard that hard slotting is pretty much dead, although Buster Olney reports that the changes that are now being discussed involve a luxury tax on total draft spending.
