Arizona Fall League Recap: 10/4

The Arizona Fall League started today, with three Pirates prospects getting in the action for the Mesa Solar Sox.  Mesa lost 12-8 to Phoenix in a game that saw seven home runs.  Robbie Grossman hit one of those homers in the third inning, although reports are that the wind played a part in the homers today.  Grossman went 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout, and also had an outfield assist in the fifth.

Phil Irwin pitched 2.1 innings, coming on to get the final out of the fifth inning, then staying on for the sixth and seventh innings.  Irwin gave up a solo homer to Anthony Gose to lead off the sixth inning, followed by a one out homer to Michael Choice.  He escaped the inning without any other damage, and ended up allowing wo runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, with no walks or strikeouts.

Jarek Cunningham went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, getting the start at second base.  Mesa takes on Phoenix again tomorrow at 3:35 PM EST.
