Lee was heating up with the Cubs, and with the Orioles, before the trades. In each case you had non-contenders trading a guy who was about to be a free agent. Lee also started off slow because of injuries in the previous two off-seasons. He doesn’t have any injuries this off-season.
2. I never “railed against signing Maholm”. I just wrote yesterday that he’s worth the $9.75 M. Sorry ’bout it.

3. Overbay doesn’t have a history of putting up the numbers he did in September. Lee does.

Yet this author, who railed against signing Maholm for 9 mil, now wants to give Lee 10 mil a year for 2 years?  I seriously dont know what to say other than ick, what a horrible, horrible analysis and article.

Under Mr. Williams thinking, we should resign Lyle Overpaid and hope his September in Az with a 840 OPS wasnt a mirage.  Instead of giving him a year at 5 mil, we should give him 2years for 20 mil.  Double Ick.

Derrek Lee is a bad option.  He performed well for the Pirates in a small sample at the end of the season, but so did Garret Jones in 2009  and Pedro Alvarez in 2010 a few years ago.  He’s 36 and his career is winding down.  The numbers over the last two years reflect this (.264 19HR 70 RBI) aren’t terrible but a far from special,  Bottom line is that hes a talented player, but he’s not a good fit for this team.
Matt Hague is a bad fit.  While he is relatively young, posted good numbers in AAA this year he isn’t good enough to be a starting 1B on a competitive team.  There is a reason Casey Kotchman spends so much time watching games from the bench.

NH has to manufacture a better option.  The Reds are looking to move Alonso he’s similar to Hague accept that he’s younger, has more power, plays better defense and is left handed.  Alonso is blocked by Votto, and they need to make moves to improve their pitching and/or dump salary.  Pirates have pitching depth and enough cap room to take back a bad contract like Bronson Arroyos.  For that matter the Reds have systematic depth at SS and Catcher, a move like that could solve multiple problems for both teams.

If that doesn’t work, what about Andre Ethier he’s a very good  left handed OF with declining defensive numbers but strong offense that would make a great RF or 1B for the Pirates.  Dodgers need to move contracts in order to sign Matt Kemp to a long term deal.  They also need to improve their minor league system.  Presley, ZVR and some cash for Ethier?

There are 3 or 4 more scenarios the Bucs can do to improve.  Old players or marginal players aren’t going to be enough to turn this team into a consistant winner for the next 3-4 years.  If Hague or DLee is the starting 1b next season then the FO has had a poor off season.

He would definitely fill a big hole in the Pirates lineup. But it is my opinion, not based on any fact, that Alvarez will probably be moved to 1B in 2013 after hopefully bouncing back next season. So signing Lee for two years could create a situation where there are two 1B but then again Alvarez may not need to be moved or may not bounce back so I say go for it.

My biggest fear with Lee is that he will sign with Milwaukee this offseason and go there and torture the Pirates.
