The $ he would get now with an extension while nice to have upfront can’t compare to what he would get in FA. The only real icentive for the player is guaranteed $ in case of injury.

So pumped.

Anyways, I think that because of the new CBA we are going to have to trade away our best players in the middle of their prime. We can’t be a big spender in the draft with the slotting. So its the only way I see to keep talent coming through.

Sign him for whatever and backload some of it and, as much as it hurts my heart, unload him to keep talent in the minors when he is most valuable….ugh. That makes me feel terrible inside.

I read it a lot but not able to register. No big deal was just wondering. And I agree partially, I think if the $ is the same and the Pirates aren’t strong contenders he will not sign an extension.
Plenty of guys take the injury risk and wait out arb. Lincecum and Fielder I’m pretty sure. Sometimes the FA carrot is too much to pass up.

If the Bucs make him what he thinks is a fair offer he’ll sign but I don’t think he is in any hurry to give up any free agency years. As Tim pointed out in article he could be a $20 million a year player after just a couple more years.

He could get hit in the head and be done forever and if he did not sign any contract he could lose millions, no way on earth would someone lose millions because he was waiting for the right team to sign with, that is something that guys in their 30’s and have made their money can do, not a 24 year old kid.

Unless after this season he agrees to a 6 or 7 year deal at 61-63 mill. IMO he wants his free agency ASAP and unless the bucs go to at least 60 now for 6 he’ll take his chances with super high arb payments. Personally I don’t care at all if they don’t get 2 years Fa, cost certainty is none of my concern. Having good ball players is.

McCutchen will not be a 4th or 5th outfielder on this team, I don’t think there is any connection between Tabata and McCutchens contracts or Walkers for that matter.
The Pirates have shown in the past that they will overpay, I think the “risk factor”is the big problem with overpaying for the Pirates and it should be.
