if the Bucs trade Hanrahan for a starter I would want him to be a # 1 or 2 rotation guy, which I think Santana is. But, boy, I’d hate to see the hammer go ! That stretch during the middle of last season was awesome, when you could almost see fear from opposing batters in the 9th.

This would be a good deal IMO. When you can pickup a quality starter for a reliever, do it. The Bucs have long needed a front line starter. The cost is extremely high for them, but they did pick up Lee last July at nearly $8MM, so there is some degree of precedent for it. And can anyone forget the Matt Morris deal when a tidy sum was paid?

At some point, the Bucs have to build a ML team. You can add a major piece or two a year, build your assets and up your payroll. Using the Field of Dreams foundation of build it, they will come you can increase attendance and up payroll. Santana would fill what is now a vacant slot for not only this season but next. There is little at AAA to step up for this season. The following season might be a different story. If it works out that a AAA guy steps up in ’13 trade Santana at the deadline and reap something for him.

If it can be worked out, do it.

The Pirates have long been willing to punt on a season and the outlook for ’12 looks the same. It’s past time some talent was bought in.

I don’t like it. If we are getting rid of Hanner, I would like to get something more long term than Santana. I cn’t see us competing this year, and maybe not next, but we will be paying $24 M to keep him for 2 years. Rather have someone with control and upside.

I would make that trade, Santana is too good to pass up and this team only has 3 starters for next year if Morton does not come back strong from hip surgery, of course the Bucs do have a couple of minor league pitching options that are getting close to being ready, but an established quality pitcher, I don’t pass on.

rather than trade hanrahan for Santana, bring back Maholm….only trade Hammer for younger guys or prospects, lets face it, i doubt they will compete for playoffs this year.

I would rather get the 1st baseman of the future but if the Angels would actually make that trade I would say do it in a second. Santana would instantly be the best pitcher in the Pirates rotation.
