The Pirates need to trade Brad Lincoln to the Yankees for that catcher that they covet so much. Bringing Morales in as a back up would be better with Jaramillo as insurance. Might leave the Pirates short on some pitching if Snyder isn't ready, but you need a good general behind the plate to direct the pitching.

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti told MLB.com's Ken Gurnick
he's looking for a position player upgrade. The potential acquisition
would be payroll neutral and has been a starter at his position.
Gurnick guesses Colletti is targeting an outfielder or first baseman
and would be willing to trade James Loney.

1B problem solved...James Loney for Garret Jones

Betemit apparently wears his glove on the wrong hand or fields using an iron skillet, because he is atrocious defensively by every available metric.

Betemit has seen the vast majority of his time at 3B (2775 innings) and has a -14.1 UZR/150 rating. He's only played 389 total innings at 1B (27 last year), so I wouldn't pencil him in there right away.

All that said, I like him as a bench signing and spot starter. If he's a full time starter, the Pirates are in trouble.

With the Pirates stressing defense this offseason (Barmes, Barajas), bringing in Betemit to be anything more than a bench guy would be contradictory.

Possible to see some betemit taking some fielding practice at 1st in spring training. Jose Morales dont know he could be a nice backup catching option. Jaramillo isnt good, Morales has some footwork issues behind the plate- but has a gun and is a gap pop hitter like jaramillo (singles hitter basically , might pop one in the gap on occasion or over the wall)

I'm kind of confused about Wilson Betemit. His batting numbers are really good, with an .838 OPS in the last two years. How does that make him a bench option on a team starved of hitting, particularly power? If he plays all four infield positions (I'm assuming with less-than-superb defense at any individual spot), then what are the odds the bucs consider him for a starting role at first? Those are actually the type of numbers we would like out of a starting first baseman. Unless I'm missing something (horrible defense, injury history, drastic platoon splits, etc.), whose to say he isn't more of a first base transition candidate rather than bench player/third base contingency plan?
