Thanks to everyone for the comments on my first feature with Pirates Prospects. I’m excited for spring training to start.
Remeber92 — The Pirates have said that Hague could be a contingency plan at third if Alvarez does struggle. Robert — I believe Hague projects to be a James Loney type first baseman. I haven’t had the chance to see him play, only at spring training and mini camps. I’m looking forward to him being at Major League camp this year. But he’s obviously very talented and deserves an opportunity to prove he can compete at the big league level.

All the kid has done is hit. If he could even post a .270 avg, 10 hrs, and 25 doubles he would be the best 1b we have had since S. Casey. Speaking of Casey, he never really had serious power but man could he hit. That is who I would compare him too with a bat. What do you think?

Minus the power and strikeout rate, but he has the ability to actually hit pitches that aren’t hung over the plate.

Great article Kristy, and welcome….I feel Hague has earned the right to compete for the job in ST, not just get some reps before being sent down. I know the power numbers need some work but so did Keith Hernandez’s. I’m not saying he is Keith Hernandez but a lot of 1b have succeeded with those types of numbers.(i.e. James Loney, Lyle overbay, Casey Kotchman, etc. just to name some recent ones)….FREE MATT HAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to see Hague succeed, hopefully at 1st. This could create a lot of great problems once Dickerson is ready. His success also gives us a lot of insurance if Alvarez cotinues to struggle. This could be a great corner infield combo and have a lot of influence on playoff odds their year and more importantly next.

Interesting that he has been taking alot of balls at third. Does this mean that the Pirates are going to make Pedro’s leash even shorter if he struggles again this year? And if McGehee can’t find his 2010 form? His offensive numbers translate better to third versus first. Unless the home run totals do in fact improve.
