BRADENTON — In order to make room for right-hander A.J. Burnett on the 40-man roster, the Pirates placed infielder Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day disabled list with a right ankle injury.
Nunez, 24, was selected from the Detroit Tigers in the Rule-5 draft in December by the Pirates.
During the 2011 season, Nunez hit .276 with 13 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 26 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 96 minor league games between High-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie.

The 60 day DL already? Why bother.

My guess is, he doesn’t really NEED the 60 day, but they needed the roster spot, and they are going to try and hang onto/hide him as long as they can.

the pirates still have to have a legitimate reason to do this. the players’ union and MLB wont allow this to happen without a true cause.

oh, I’m sure he needs to be on the DL, just not bad enough for a 60 day stint

Exactly. Cut him loose, don’t play games.

Looks like the Pirates really like Nunez, and do not want to have to return him to Detroit. He will likely be in Pittsburgh a very limited amount of time, and will likely have “setbacks” in his health. I suspect he opens ’13 in Altoona

Who’d they hire to break his ankle, Paulie Walnuts?
