He is a head-scratcher showing great velocity and good control in the past but hasn’t been able to put it together in the majors yet. People get down on a lot of these pickups but wasn’t Garrett Jones one of these same types of moves? AAA depth when picked up. Where would we be at 1B/RF without him the last 2.5 years? He isn’t great but he’s a useful part…that we got for free.

Aaron Poreda, Shairon Martis, Logan Kensing, Ryota Igarashi, probably a couple others I’m forgetting. One more is the 300+ pound reliever who throws in the upper 90s, Jose Diaz. Odds are none of these guys will amount to anything, but people were probably saying that about Ryan Vogelsong a year ago. Better to try guys like this, extreme long shots with some upside, than guys you know will be solid AAA players and nothing more.

Of course, Valesente is just a guy to fill in at class A, but every system needs guys like that, too.

The lefty had shoulder issue the last year-plus. He is playing independent league ball on the Atlantic coast this year. I’m sure NH knows him well but he is a guy to watch and sign also I think. Had a real nice rookie year but got roughed up after his plus control turned into just good control. Lefty that threw 89-91, a slider, and a change and excellent control before the injury. If he is healthy I am guessing Indy hitters will be no match for him. 5.18 era/1.440 whip in the majors and 3.09/1.199 whip in AAA. He is still only 28 and the indians non-tendered him last fall.

It’s rare for someone to make the jump to the majors thru indie ball, but it does happen. There are probably few guys going to camp that will be excited as Valesente. More power to him and those who truly play for the love of it.

It’s just irritating, and lately I haven’t had much else to do, so having a passion for something like baseball coupled with an inability to “turn the other cheek,” really leads me to many of my rants that you could find throughout this website.

However, it is counterproductive to try and argue with them or rationalize the signing.

They simply do not follow baseball enough, or do not understand the depth of the game enough to sustain a valid argument. By engaging in a “vassal argument” it takes away from the constructive and entertaining points of a forum/msg board.

Just ignore them and engage with people who understand the game better, and eventually they will be weeded out because no one will respond to there tireless complaints.
