Game Eight vs. Twins in Bradenton

Good morning from McKechnie Field. It’s currently chilly, cloudy and rainy, so let’s hope it clears up before game time.

  • There will be two Pirates (3-4) games today. The 1:05 start against the Minnesota Twins (3-5) will start at 1:05 here at McKechnie and will air on Root Sports. Lefty Erik Bedard (three innings) will start against right-hander Terry Doyle of the Twins.
  • Bedard, 33, is making his second start this spring. He received a no-decision his last trip to the mound against the Blue Jays, where he allowed two runs on a hit over two innings with two walks and a strikeout.
  • Following Bedard in relief are: Jo-Jo Reyes (2), Joel Hanrahan, Jason Grilli and Juan Cruz.
  • Bucs lineup: Alex Presley 7, Nate McLouth 9, Yamaico Navarro 6, Rod Barajas 2, Casey McGehee 3, Jake Fox 3, Gorkys Hernandez 8, Chase d’Arnaud, Bedard 1
  • Extras: Pedro Alvarez, Eric Fryer, Jose Tabata, Andrew McCutchen, Clint Barmes, Brandon Boggs, Anderson Hernandez, Ramon Cabrera, Neil Walker.
  • Walker, who has been sidelined for a few days with low back stiffness, is currently a scheduled replacement in today’s game.
  • Twins lineup: Denard Span 8, Jamey Carroll 6, Josh Willingham 9, Justin Morneau DH, Danny Valencia , Trevor Ploufee, Steve Pearce 3, Rene Rivera 2, Alexi Casilla 4
  • The second game is a “B” game held at Pirate City. That game will start at 10 AM. Right-hander Chris Leroux will start for the Bucs.
  • Following Leroux are: Duke Welker, Evan Meek, Jose Diaz, Mike Crotta, Daniel Cabrera.
  • Bucs lineup: Starling Marte 8, Josh Harrison 6, Nick Evans 9, Matt Hague 5, Garrett Jones DH, Jeff Clement 3, Robbie Grossman 7, Michael McKenry 2, Jordy Mercer 4
  • The only scheduled extra listed was Tony Sanchez.
  • The Pirates will face the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow in Port Charlotte at 1:05 PM. Right-hander Kevin Correia will start for the Bucs against righty Jeff Neimann. Justin Wilson, Daniel Moskos, Jared Hughes, Bryan Morris and Doug Slaten will follow in relief.
  • The Pirates are scheduled to play the Netherlands in St. Petersburg on Monday at 1:05 as part of the International Baseball Tournament at Al Lang Field. The tournament, which doesn’t count in the official spring training standings, takes place from March 6-18 and features six Major League teams from the Netheralnds, Canada and St. Petersburg College. Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen, Rudy Owens and Jeff Locke will pitch for the Pirates.
  • Tim was at Pirate City for the B game today. Here is a post of inning by inning. 
  • Neil Walker took batting practice with the team today and is cleared to resume play. Walker will bat cleanup against the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow in Port Charlotte.
  • Right-hander A.J. Burnett had a pretty good shiner going today in the clubhouse, but was not wearing an eye patch. He will meet with the media later today.
