John brings up a good point. MLB wouldn’t allow the deals early, even if Cole wanted to sign early. And it wasn’t just Boras who held out until the deadline. Danny Hultzen held out until the deadline, and he was also a college junior.

Cole is a workhorse. Seems to me that his arm needed a break anyway after pitching well over 100 innings at UCLA. Although it would have been nice to see him in action, the health of his arm is far more important.

I just can’t agree that his choice of agent was irrelevant. I mean, a college junior picked first overall refuses to sign until the deadline? What leverage do you have at that point? I mean, maybe he made another million, at most, the sides are never that far apart on their negotiations. I just think it’s ridiculous that, knowing he was going to sign anyhow, he chose to set himself back 6-8 months in his career. Now, maybe he wasn’t directly involved in the negotiations, which was likely, just taking ques from the agent in a weekly call or something. Either way, he’s the player, it’s his fault. Not that I’m necessarily irate over this; he got his innings in via fall workouts and the Arizona league. However, I find it difficult to argue that he wouldn’t be closer to making the team at some point this year if he had signed earlier.

Once again, yay to the only change in the CBA that made any sense

His choice in agent was irrelevant, no over slot picks sign before the deadline. In the old system MLB would not approve them even if a deal was struck. At least the new CBA means we get these guys on July 15th now.

Glad we could stick to the topic at hand….Ya know, the fact that Cole screwed himself out of being in a Pirate uniform this season because he hired a jerk for an agent. The one thing that the new CBA actually got right was an earlier signing date.
