Morton to Throw in Intrasquad Scrimmage

BRADENTON, Fla. — Right-hander Charlie Morton continues to take steps forward and could be seeing time in the Grapefruit League with the Pirates soon.

On Saturday afternoon, while the Major League club was playing the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla., Morton threw live batting practice at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

It marked Morton’s second live BP session this spring. Morton threw his first live batting practice at Pirate City on Wednesday. The 28-year-old underwent  left hip surgery to repair a labrum tear in mid-October. This outing, Morton threw upped his pitch count to a 40-pitch session to live hitters.

Morton’s next outing will be on Wednesday, March 7th. Morton is scheduled to throw two innings in a 10 AM intrasquad scrimmage at Pirate City. One team will be Major League position players, the other will Minor League camp guys. Also scheduled to throw behind Morton are Kyle McPherson and Rudy Owens. The game is expected to last 5-6 innings.
