Minor League Schedule: 5/15/12

Altoona was off yesterday. They resume their schedule tonight with Tim Alderson on the mound, making his first start of the season. Jameson Taillon starts tonight. Jeff Locke will make his eighth start of the season tonight. In his last start on 5/10, which was against Lehigh Valley, he allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. On the year, he has pitched 40.2 innings, allowing 42 hits, nine walks and has struck out thirty. Jeff has a 3.94 ERA in his three road starts. Left-handed batters are hitting .154 against him with no homers, righties are hitting .324 with two homers

Tim Alderson will make his first start of the season tonight. He made just one start last year in 42 appearances. Tim has also made two appearances for Indianapolis this year, allowing two runs in four innings. In his last appearance on 5/8, Alderson gave up three runs over three innings. It ended a streak of seven straight scoreless appearances with Altoona. Between his two stops this year, he has pitched 20 innings, allowing 18 hits, six walks and he has struck out 18 batters.

Jameson Taillon will make his eighth start of the season tonight. In 36.2 innings, he has given up 25 hits, walked six batters and struck out 36, with no home runs allowed. Jameson has given up two runs or less in all seven of his starts this season. In his last start on 5/10, he pitched six scoreless innings. Batters are hitting .189 against him this year, left-handed hitters are hitting just .169 with 18 strikeouts. In his four road starts, Taillon has a 2.18 ERA.

Matt Benedict will make his eighth start of the season tonight. On the year he has pitched 37.1 innings, allowing forty hits, nine walks and he has struck out twenty-four batters. Matt allowed seven runs over 5.1 innings in his last start. It was the first time this year he has allowed more than three runs in a game. He is the team leader in innings pitched and among starters, he has the best ERA on the team. In his four home starts he has a 4.09 ERA.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
