Karstens Activated for Start; Morris Optioned to Triple-A

Jeff Karstens will start tonight in Philadelphia.

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-hander Jeff Karstens from the disabled list and optioned reliever Bryan Morris to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Karstens will make his first start for Pittsburgh tonight since April 17 when he exited after just one inning. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day with right shoulder inflammation. He had his rehab pushed back due a groin injury as well.

Morris was recalled on Sunday for an extra arm in the bullpen, which had several relievers unavailable. The 25-year-old didn’t make an appearance in the short stay. Morris posted a 2.28 ERA with five saves and 44 strikeouts in 23 relief appearances for Triple-A Indy this season.

Infielder Drew Sutton, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay yesterday, will join the club in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Sutton was added to the 40-man roster on Sunday after they transferred Charlie Morton to the 60-day DL (Tommy John surgery), but will still need to make a move to the active roster.
