Minor League Schedule: 6/26/12

Rudy Owens gets the start for Indianapolis tonight, facing off against top prospect Jacob Turner. Owens has made 14 straight quality starts to begin the season. Bradenton went with Casey Sadler to start game two of yesterday’s doubleheader. Jameson Taillon is the likely starter for today. He hasn’t made a start since last Tuesday. If Taillon does start, it would be the first time that he and Gerrit Cole started on the same day. For State College, Luis Heredia makes the start, his second of the season. The GCL Pirates were rained out yesterday. They will play a doubleheader today consisting of two 7 inning games. A full recap of yesterday’s games can be found here.

Probable starter: Rudy Owens (6-2 2.38)

Rudy Owens will make his 15th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 90.2 innings, giving up 81 hits, 11 homers, 14 walks and he has recorded 62 strikeouts. Rudy is 4-1 2.17 in seven home starts this season. In his last game, he gave up two runs on six hits in six innings. It was the sixth straight start in which he gave up two or fewer runs. Owens ranks fourth in the International League in ERA and fifth with his 1.05 WHIP.

Double-A: Altoona (34-39) @ Harrisburg (38-37) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Gerrit Cole (1-0 3.60)

Gerrit Cole will make his second start with Altoona tonight. In his first start on 6/20, Gerrit went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with no walks and six strikeouts. He made 13 starts for Bradenton, pitching a total of 67 innings, allowing 53 hits, five homers, 21 walks and he had 69 strikeouts. Cole ranks fourth in the FSL in both WHIP(1.10) and ERA.

Jameson Taillon will likely get the start tonight for Bradenton. He has made 14 starts, pitching a total of 74.2 innings, surrendering 67 hits and four homers while walking 20 and striking out 67 batters. In his last start, Jameson threw seven shutout innings, giving up just one hit. He has an 0.93 ERA at home, 6.11 on the road.

Probable starter: Zack Dodson (2-5 5.97)

Zack Dodson will make his 15th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 63.1 innings, allowing 78 hits, seven homers, 28 walks and he has 44 strikeouts. In his last start on 6/21, he went six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts. That outing was his second straight against Lexington. Zack faced Lakewood on 5/28, going 4.2 innings with one earned run on five hits and three walks. On the road this year, Dodson is 0-5 7.71 in nine starts.

Probable Starter: Luis Heredia (0-0 0.00)

Luis Heredia will make his second start of the season. He pitched four scoreless innings in his first game, allowing just one hit and two walks, with four strikeouts. Luis spent the 2011 season with the GCL Pirates, where he went 1-2 4.75 in 12 games. He pitched a total of 30.1 innings, giving up 28 hits, three homers, 19 walks and he had 23 strikeouts. He signed with the Pirates in August of 2010, shortly after his 16th birthday, for $2.6mil.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
