And even in a bad season, I’lll take Barmes over Holt. That shows you what I think of Holt’s fielding at SS. He can be an adequate 2bman imho (think Johnny Ray), but that’s about it.

any insight on why Thomas and Ross have not signed yet? Thomas is a college junior and not signing doesn’t make much sense unless the Pirates are really low balling him, which I can’t imagine as I was expecting about slot for him… thought Ross would also be about slot but with a college as an option maybe he’s holding out for above slot and the Pirates are unwilling to do so with Appel and/or Buehler being better above slot options?

.963 fielding percentage and 9 errors. Not his best season at all. But i’ll indulge you for a moment and let’s say you are correct. His .202 average and -0.5 WAR certainly are not helped by his defense. Typically a bad defensive player makes up for it with offense. This is not the case here. So I do agree with you that it is possible for someone to come in who is worse at defense. But with his offense being absolutely putrid, it matters not at this point.

I’d like to see him move up also, but everytime *I* have seen him, his defense has been lacking. Perhaps they want to see that improve? Another reason is that they have Navarro, Mercer, and d’Arnaud at AAA?

He has the look of a utility IF, but he does have a nice bat.
